Do I Need a Bartending License to Get a Bartending Job?

bartending certificate

The answer for all 50 states is the same. By law there is no requirement for bartenders to hold a bartending license to legally serve drinks. However, a legal serving age must be met and differs from state to state. The minimum age varies from 18 up to 21.

No standard or organization oversees bartending licenses or their legitimacy either. Bartending schools offer their own licenses and certificates of achievement upon completion. This means that any school can issue licenses to whoever they see fit.

With that being said, almost every bar requires several months to a few years of experience to be hired or at minimum completion of bartending school.
